UPDATE 2: Video Guide

We did it - Siri on iPod Touch 4G - Connected to Apple Servers Finally [Video]

Here's a new significant and big step on porting Siri on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. The last few weeks we saw many screenshots and videos showing Siri running on all iDevices but without connecting Apple servers. Now hackers has just did it.

Steven Troughton-Smith is the guy behind this progress. This guy was the first one worked on porting Siri on iPhone 4 with the iPhone developer Chpwn. Few minutes ago Chpwn confirmed on his timeline that siri connected Apple's servers on iPhone 4 after hack session.

When Siri come to iPhone 4, 3GS, iPod Touch 4G, 3G, iPad ?
No official release date announced so far. But diffidently it looks very imminent.

Siri on iPod Touch 4G [Video] :

Update : Folks at 9to5mac filmed an interesting video that compared between iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S running Siri

Here's an interview with Steven the guy behind this great job.
Mark: Where do you go from here with the port?

Steven: At this point it’s all about confirming this works across devices, making it reproducible (we got it working on two devices today), and documenting everything. It does require files from an iPhone 4S which aren’t ours to distribute, and it also requires a validation token from the iPhone 4S that has to be pulled live from a jailbroken iPhone 4S, and it’s about a 20-step process right now.

Mark: In its current state, is the port 100% functional, is there anything you would like to see work better?

Steven: Yes, it seems to be 100% functional. I’m working on the rough edges, but everything that works on the iPhone 4S seems to work here

Mark: Do you ever see Siri showing up in Cydia (or another jailbreak store) for non natively supported devices?

Steven: No, I could not be a part of that. I have no doubts that others will package this up and distribute it quasi-illegally, or try and sell it to people. I am only interested in the technology and making it work; proving that it works and works well on the iPhone 4 and other devices

Mark: So, you also got Siri working on the fourth-generation iPod touch, how is that working out?

Steven: We got chpwn’s iPod touch up and running with Siri after proving it works on my iPhone 4. Unfortunately the microphone on the iPod is nowhere near as good as the iPhone – you will notice that the Siri level meter hardly moves when you talk to it. While it does work, you have to speak loudly and clearly to the iPod

Mark: How long did porting take you, what was the “I got it” moment?

Steven: Basically, I already had everything I needed to make it work. I had spent a lot of time mapping out in my head exactly how Siri works on the iPhone. All I needed was access to a jailbroken iPhone 4S to put my hunch to the test. It literally took no longer than 10 minutes to put all the pieces in place and perform our first test on my iPhone 4, and it was an instant success.

Semitethered Jailbreak Update

To install this, add the following repository to cydia: http://thebigboss.org/semitether. Note: after install, you will have to reboot your device, so make sure you are prepared at a computer to reboot tethered with redsn0w or just “home button out” of cydia and manually respring until you get home.

Big update to semitethered jailbreak today. v0.9.1 incorporates Saurik’s new mobile substrate. Thanks to Saurik, we are entirely rid of all the daemon patching – this means there’s no more daemon patching or restarting. Most the semi-tether work is now done by mobile substrate. The semitether package from the repository now protects your iOS 5 notification center plugins and gives you the option to patch mobile safari so that it will work on the non-jailbreak reboot mode. I’m still looking into patching mail, if possible.

Summary of changes:
1) Much more stable with new mobile substrate
2) Can patch safari so it works in the non-jailbreak reboot mode
3) App to monitor the status of your semitether and reapply. Check after cydia installs.
This new version will definitely solve all the flakiness problems we had in the past. However, be aware that this is a total rewrite of mobile substrate. Until this appears in a community source, you are beta testing so installing it is entirely at your own risk. As always, please report issues via email.
Also, with an update from MyWi author and Appsync team, we should be compatible with those, too.

A Closer Look at Nokia’s Windows Phones: Lumia 800 and Lumia 710

 Lumia 710
Nokia recently announced two Windows Phone 7 devices. The Lumia 800 and the Lumia 710. This marked an interesting change for Nokia as they were previously reluctant to leave an operating system that was their own. Windows Phone OS may be just the push they need to remain strong in the market.
Let’s take a closer look at both phones.

Lumia 800

Lumia 800
The Lumia 800 isn’t all that bad looking. It’s similar to the N9.  The corners are a bit sharp, but it has a cool seamless design. The body is one smooth piece, which is very cool looking. It somewhat reminds us of the older iPod Nano that was made from a single piece of metal. The phone, however, is polycarbonate. Polycarbonate is lightweight and shatter-resistant.
The handset comes in three colors: cyan, magenta and black. The Lumia 800 houses a 1.4GHz single-core processor, but is said to be nice and speedy.
Dimensions – The handset is .47 inches thick,  2.4 inches wide and 4.58 inches long. Nice little compact size.
Lumia 800 front
Display – The screen is 3.7 inches, which is just a hair larger than the iPhone display (3.5-inch). Of course it’s a capacitive AMOLED touchscreen. The resolution is 400 x 800.  It records 720p HD video at 30fps.
Camera – 8MP. This is about average these days.
Battery – The Lumia 800 is advertised as such: 9.5 hours talk time (3G), 335 hours standby time (3G). 55 hours music playback and 7 hours of video playback. It’s powered by a 1450mAh battery.
Storage - 16GB
RAM – 512MB
Lumia 800 Side
We obviously don’t have one in our hands, but if we had to say at a glance that we have any problems with it, it’s something that plagued the iPhone 4. The screen isn’t recessed in the slightest. In fact, it almost seems to protrude based on the images we’ve seen. Anyone who has dropped a phone knows what that can mean.
Lumia 800 Back

Tech Specs via Nokia’s Website

Lumia 710
This is another nice little smartphone with a clean design. It doesn’t have the single-piece body of the 800, but it still looks pretty.
Dimensions - The handset is .49 inches thick,  2.4 inches wide and 4.68 inches long. Like the 800, it’s a nice, compact smartphone.
Lumia 710 Front
Display -  It’s loaded with a 3.7 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen, which is just a hair larger than the iPhone display (3.5-inch) and the exact same size as the 800. It’s a ClearBlack, anti-glare screen. The resolution is 480 x 800.  It records video at 1280 pixels by 720 pixels at 30fps, just like the Lumia 800.
Camera – 5MP. This is a bit lower than many current phones, but nothing to be disappointed at. In fact, as we’ve heard, MP count doesn’t tell the whole story.
Lumia 710 frontbakcolors
Battery - The Lumia 710 is advertised as such: 7.6 hours talk time (3G), 400 hours standby time (3G). 38 hours music playback and 6 hours of video playback. It’s powered by a 1300mAh battery.
Storage - 8GB
RAM - 512MB
Lumia 710 Side
What’s kind of cool about this handset is that it has swappable covers. Definitely a nice extra.
Tech Specs via Nokia’s Website

A Chance for both Windows Phone 7 and Nokia
Windows Phone 7 definitely needs a strong push in the market. It doesn’t quite have that yet, and these are the kinds of phones Microsoft needs to get their mobile OS in the hands of consumers. Nokia, on the other hand, needs to put something awesome together if they want to stay in the smartphone race. Now they are running with an OS that is current, and they seem to be doing it very well at this point. Let’s see if things pick up.

iPhone 4S Jailbreak Done by iPhone Dev-Team, Release Imminent [ScreenShot]

Good News! iPhone Dev-team has successfully jailbroke iPhone 4S as MuscleNerd just tweeted about the very preliminary iPhone 4S jailbreak on his Twitter account. He also posted two pictures that shows Cydia running on iPhone 4S on iOS 5.

VERY preliminary 4S JB:http://twitpic.com/76vcp4 http://twitpic.com/76vct2 (Huge missing pieces prevent public release. LOTS of work left)

Along with this good news, there is a bad news too. It is clear from the statement of MuscleNerd that there is still a lot of work left in the jailbreak for 4S that is preventing public release. But it is confirmed that the release of iPhone 4S jailbreak is imminent. Also jailbreaking iPhone 4S on iOS 5 means we have iPad 2 jailbreak as well because both iPad 2 and iPhone 4S has the same bootrom. But for all this, you have to wait as you did for iPad 2 jailbreak on 4.3.3.

Please don't fall for the scammers that tell you we can bring untethered jailbreak on iOS 5 . They all are scammers. Please stay away from them. When untethered jailbreak for iOS 5, iPhone 4S and iPad 2 becomes official, we will let you know.

Siri, a hacker’s accomplice?!

hacker SiriReports are flooding the web that Siri, the voice-recognition-based digital assistant on the iPhone 4S, may actually make it easier for people to access private data on your device… with a passcode lock! By default, it’s possible to access Siri even when your phone is locked with a passcode. In theory this makes sense – instead of having to unlock your phone to send a text, you just have to bring up Siri and have her do all the heavy lifting.
However, the problem arises when an unwanted individual discovers that it’s possible to access private data like calendar appointments, text messages and emails just by asking nicely, no matter if the phone is locked or not.

Now, there’s a pretty simple solution – in the Passcode Lock settings, just switch Siri to “Off”. This will mean that you can no longer access your favorite digital assistant when your device is locked, but it also means that no one else can either. And, of course, Siri will still be fully functional if the phone is unlocked.

It’s an unfortunate but true fact that people will take advantage of this security flaw. For that reason, if you have any sensitive data on your device, it’s probably a good idea to disable Siri from the lock screen.
Siri, I’m disappointed in you…

Via: Gizmodo

Siri on an iPad?

When Apple first announced Siri, one of the most frequent questions about the digital assistant was which devices would it support. Unfortunately, it didn’t take long to realize that Apple was limiting the voice-recognition service to just the iPhone 4S. I was particularly surprised that Siri wasn’t coming to the iPad 2, seeing as it’s equipped with the same A5 processor as the 4S.

Well it looks like I wasn’t the only one interested in Siri on an iPad. A jailbreak developer known on twitter as Jackoplane tweeted screenshots of Siri enabled in the settings of a jailbroken first-gen iPad.

Unfortunately, though, there appears to be an issue – jailbroken Siri doesn’t play nice with Apple’s server. So, any command that requires contact with Apple servers is not possible on a device other than the iPhone 4S.

But other than the server issue, the successful port of Siri to the iPad means that there might some hope.

HOW TO: Teardown and Repair Your iPhone4S

iFixYouri does a complete teardown of an iPhone 4S. The device release on October 14th, 2011. A lot of the features are very similar, but not the same to the CDMA and GSM, including the screen, dock connector, back glass, and the vibrator(same as the CDMA), making replacement and repair services readily available.
Head over the break to see how to teardown and repair your iPhone4S…

How to Perform a Semi Tethered Jailbreak of iOS 5

These are instructions on how to perform a semi tethered jailbreak of your iOS 5 iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

A semi-tethered jailbreak is an interim solution which solves the problem of being unable to reboot with a tethered jailbreak. The semi tethered jailbreak by BigBoss will allow you to reboot on the road, but with limited functionality. It is enough that you are no longer stranded, and you can use your phone, text, and many other features. This is just until you get home and can use redsn0w again to “just boot tethered”. Once you do that, you’re back to fully functional state.

Step One
Jailbreak and boot your device tethered using the instructions below:

● iPhone 4 (Mac, Windows)
● iPhone 3GS (Mac, Windows)
● iPhone - No Baseband Update (Mac)
● iPod Touch 4G (Mac, Windows)
● iPod Touch 3G (Mac, Windows)
● iPad 1 (Mac, Windows)

Step Two
Press to launch Cydia from your Springboard.

Step Eleven
Press the Install button at the top right of the screen.

Step Twelve
Press the Confirm button to begin installation.

Step Thirteen
Press the large Reboot Device button.

You're device will now reboot without stalling at the Apple logo!

To get full functionality back you will need to boot tethered. Launch RedSn0w as you did in Step One then select Extras then Just boot from the menu.

Update BigBoss

Semitethered Jailbreak

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Apps, Jailbreak

Edit: October 23, 2:37am.

I updated to 0.7.9. This version will take about 90 seconds after it first boots up and then your device will respring again. This timing was the only way to get some of the launch daemons to properly relaunch.

This version should fix issues for some of you folks where:
1) Device does not sync with itunes and only errors. Hopefully solved.
2) Device reboots after 2-3 minutes.
3) App sync issue – this is unworkable. Appsync hard patches system files and does not even use mobile substrate. I had to conflict with it. For now, semi-tether boot is impossible with appsync. You guys need to bug those guys to fix appsync to use mobile substrate (like everyone else uses).
Note, Saurik is working on an update to mobile substrate that will solve many of the issues with the semi-tether package. Hopefully this will be out in a day or two. At this time, we can finalize beta testing. I plan to hold further updates until after Saurik has released his mobile substrate update. Saurik’s updates will eliminate the need for the long 90 second respring on boot also.

This update was only tested on iphone 4. After saurik’s mobile substrate changes, more devices will be tested. Next updates coming in next 2-3 days.
——————————–
Original Post:
My iOS5 semitethered jailbreak package is ready for beta testing. What is semitethered jailbreak and why do you care? In short, it is protection for if your device reboots while you’re on the road. Read on.
As you may know, iOS5 currently has a tethered jailbreak. This means that after you have jailbroken and installed most stuff you care about, you go to reboot your device, and it will no longer boot. You will be either stuck at apple logo forever, or you will get to itunes restore screen. When this happens, you have to hook up to your computer and use redsn0w “just boot” feature which gets you rebooted successfully again. It’s not all bad, as iOS5 is pretty stable. But if your device crashes and reboots while you’re out on the road, you are screwed and without a phone until you get home.

An untethered jailbreak is one that does not have such problems. Here you can reboot and the device reboots successfully. Because we are using the limera1n exploit discovered from Geohot last year, we are always guaranteed a tethered jailbreak on last generation devices. A new exploit will need to be found to untether us.
To get us through this period, I have worked on a semi-tethered solution. The semi-tethered jailbreak will allow you to reboot on the road, but with limited functionality. It is enough that you are no longer stranded, and you can use your phone, text, and many other features. This is just until you get home and can use redsn0w again to “just boot tethered”. Once you do that, you’re back to fully functional state.

Here is a summary of what you can and cannot do when in semi-tethered reboot state. Remember, this is only when your device crashed and rebooted on the road and before you got back to your computer to “just boot”. It is better than being stuck in apple logo:
1) Can use phone, sms (text messages)
2) Can use every other stock app on iphone.
3) Cannot use mobile safari
4) Can use other appstore web browsers such as atomic web browser
5) Cannot use mail app. You could install a gmail app from appstore or such instead.
6) You cannot use any jailbreak tweak, app, cydia until you boot tethered.
7) While in the semitether booted state, you should not add a jailbreak ios5 notification such as sbsettings to notifications during this state or your device will be stuck in a respring loop until you get home to “boot tethered”.

Those are all the limitations I have found so far. There may be some others. I may provide a more technical write up on why these limitations exist, but for now it doesn’t really matter. They just do.

Now, there are some other caveats to installing this package:
1) The device will take longer to boot up. When you reboot, it has to reload every service. It will respring a couple times also.

2) According to Saurik, there are some “problems” to reloading all daemons on the fly. This is why mobile substrate installation requires “reboot device” in cydia. I have not experienced any of these problems, but I am not promising they do not exist. This is why we will need testing to see which problems may occur.
I believe the good outweigh the bad here. Once the untethered jailbreak is out, you will not need or want to install this semitether package. In future iOS versions when we are back to having only a tethered jailbreak, you should be able to install this again to semitether your jailbreak.

As far as support for this package, please send me email preferably from Cydia so the proper semitether subject is used. If you want to email me from a computer, and want a response, use this subject: “Cydia/APT(A): semitether”. Remember, this is still in beta stages and may not be perfect. Do not install this if you are not prepared for that.

As for current testing, I have only tested this on an iphone 4 GSM running iOS5. As further testing shows success, I will update this page. Further, when this package seems stable enough, I may move it into the main bigboss source.

To install this, add the following repository to cydia: http://thebigboss.org/semitether. Note: after install, you will have to reboot your device, so make sure you are prepared at a computer to reboot tethered with redsn0w or just “home button out” of cydia and manually respring until you get home.
To test the success of this, simply reboot your device. If it boots up, it worked. Make sure you are near your computer so you can tether boot it after to get your jailbreak functionality back.

For those of iPhone 4S users who have a passcode enabled, Siri can still be activated from your lockscreen. So Siri wold let anyone bypass your iPhone Lockscreen to make a call, send a message, update Facebook, update Twitter or do more things without you.

redsn0w 0.9.9b6 fixes Location Services issue for 3GS w/06.15. See #14 is.gd/6eek4Y to re-run it over existing iOS5 JB

Update #14:
We’ve released version 0.9.9b6 of redsn0w, with both a functional fix and cosmetic fix for iOS5 jailbreakers. For iPhone3GS owners with the 06.15 baseband, this redsn0w eliminates the network crash you saw when using Location Services in iOS5 (in fact, you don’t even need to disable Location Services anymore during the initial setup). The cosmetic fix is to the visual countdown you see when going into DFU mode.

It’s okay to re-run this redsn0w over an existing device jailbroken at iOS5. Just choose “Jailbreak” again and de-select Cydia (in other words, all the checkboxes will be unchecked). If you are lucky enough to have an old-bootrom iPhone3GS, please pre-select the IPSW first (redsn0w can’t yet auto-detect the FW version of your old-bootrom 3GS if it’s already been jailbroken).

Downgrade iOS 5 GM To iOS 4.3.5 On iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch

Yesterday was a big day starting from the iPhone 4S to the recently released iOS 5 GM for developers. Since iOS 5 GM is installable by everyone, you may have updated to iOS 5 by now. In case you didn’t like the tethered jailbreak, found a few problems on your iOS device or discovered some apps that were not supported, that you desperately needed… you’re in luck: you can downgrade iOS 5 to iOS 4.3.3, iOS 4.3.5 or older.

Before you downgrade, please remember you can only downgrade your iDevice firmware if, and only if, you have saved your SHSH blobs somewhere safely, hopefully with Saurik’s Cydia server, or locally on your machine.
From now on, I will assume you have saved your blobs on Saurik’s Cydia server.

STEP 1: To start with, you need to make sure you have a copy of iOS 4.3.5 or whatever firmware you need to downgrade for your device which you can find and download from here.
STEP 2: Next, you need to make sure your hosts file is pointing to Saurik’s server, and not Apple’s. If you haven’t done this then please check this guide.

Alternatively, use TinyUmbrella to make iTunes look at Cydia’s Server in the Advanced options.

STEP 3:
Now plug in your iOS device, and switch it off, but leave it plugged in.

STEP 4: Put your device into DFU mode, our guide here.

STEP 5: Select your firmware manually to restore to. (Shift on Windows, and option on a Mac)

It says that it will talk to Apple when really, it is talking to the Cydia servers.

Click here to enlargeHey presto! Your device should now have downgraded without a hitch…
But, should your phone should now have an error, such as error 1015, DO NOT PANIC! This is normal and has a quick fix. Just download anduse Recboot to kick it out of recovery mode –

How To: Downgrade From iOS 5 Beta To iOS 4.3.5 Without Saved SHSH Blobs

With a lot of people running the iOS 5 beta series firmware, I am sure downgrading back down to the official iOS 4.3.5 firmware has crossed your mind. If this sounds like you, you will be glad to know that the process of downgrading back to the iOS 4.3.5 firmware is extremely simple. It does not involve changing your hosts file or using the application TinyUmbrella and it doesn’t require you to have saved SHSH blobs. This is because the iOS 4.3.5 firmware is the latest official firmware available.

Note: The iOS 4.3.5 firmware can be Jailbroken but it is a tethered Jailbreak. Follow our step-by-step guides in our

How To Jailbreak section
.

You can follow the straightforward guide below for downgrading your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad running the iOS 5 Beta 1, iOS 5 Beta 2, iOS 5 Beta 3, iOS 5 Beta 4, iOS 5 Beta 5, iOS 5 Beta 6 or iOS 5 Beta 7 firmware to the iOS 4.3.5 firmware.

Downgrading From iOS 5 Beta 1 – 7 To iOS 4.3.5

Step 1) - The first thing you are going to need to do is ensure you are running the latest development version of iTunes on your computer (which will be iTunes 10.5 beta 7). You can download iTunes 10.5 beta 7 for Windows and Mac OS X from the Apple Dev Center.

Step 2) – Once you have ensured you are running the latest version of iTunes on your computer you will need to make sure you have access to the iOS 4.3.5 firmware. If you need to download this firmware file you can go to the iJailbreak Downloads Section.

Step 3) – Now comes the hardest part; You must put your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad into DFU mode. This is done by doing the following:

  • Turn your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad off.
  • Hold the Power and Home Button for exactly 10 seconds.
  • Once you Hold the Power and Home Button for 10 seconds release the Power Button and continue holding the Home Button for up to 30 seconds
If you enter DFU mode correctly iTunes will open telling you that that you must restore your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.

Step 4) - With iTunes open press Shift+Restore (Windows) or Option+Restore (Mac) and select the iOS 4.3.5 firmware file. Upon doing this your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad will begin restoring itself to the iOS 4.3.5 firmware without any problems as the iOS 4.3.5 firmware is the latest official firmware.
