What To Do If You Drop Your iPhone In Water

iPhone 4
You just walked in the kitchen and you see a glass of water that was spilled on your iPhone. The very first rule that you should know is Do Not Turn It On! You could risk the chance of damaging it even more if the circuits short out. If you have cell phone insurance, you may want to take it in for repair. If you do not have any insurance and don't have any money to get a new phone, there are some steps you can possibly try to take and see if you can save your iPhone from water damage, but there is no guarantee.

To possibly try to attempt to save your iPhone from water damage, you will need to disassemble your iPhone so you can dry the parts inside. It is also important for you to that if you open your iPhone and have a warranty, your warranty will become null and
void and you are doing this at your own risk. As you are following these steps, you will need to remember how to put it back together and trace your steps backwards.
PDA Parts has some great videos on YouTube so you can watch the step by step process of the disassembling the Apple iPhone. They also have some great parts that you can purchase for your Apple iPhone. Here is a step by step process of how to disassemble the iPhone so you can let it dry out, you may also want to watch one of the videos they have so you can visually see what to do.

Repair Your iPhone From Water Damage Step 1:
Remove the sim tray. To do this, use the included slim card removal tool or a paper clip. Insert it on the bottom of the hole in the iPhone and the sim card should come right out.

Repair Your iPhone From Water Damage Step 2:
Remove the back bottom case using a case opener. Run it along the bottom of the back part of the iPhone and remove carefully.

Repair Your iPhone From Water Damage Step 3:
There are three screws to be removed under this case using a small phillips head screwdriver.

Repair Your iPhone From Water Damage Step 4:
Using the case opener tool again, run it along both edges of the iPhone case very carefully to remove the back base from the frame. You will still see a ribbon attached to both pieces. Remove this ribbon very carefully.

Repair Your iPhone From Water Damage Step 5:
You will now have to remove three antenna cables that are held on by glue. Do this very carefully.

Repair Your iPhone From Water Damage Step 6:
Remove the 10 screws that are on the outside of the case and one is underneath a piece of tape that you will have to pull up to unscrew.

Repair Your iPhone From Water Damage Step 7:
Remove the three screws that hold the motherboard together. When you are pulling the motherboard apart, it is very important that you be careful because there are four cables underneath. One of the cables is a latch and you will have to move the cable upright in order to remove it.

Repair Your iPhone From Water Damage Step 8:
Pull the motherboard and battery out together. Do not separate them, they adhered together.

Repair Your iPhone From Water Damage Step 9:
You can now remove the metal frame from the front.

Repair Your iPhone From Water Damage Step 10:
Remove the LCD and Digitizer. There are three tiny clips on each side. Remove them by prying one side and then the other to separate them. Take your time and be careful with this part when you are doing this, it can be very difficult.

Now that you have your iPhone taken apart, you will need to place it in the windowsill and let it dry. In my experience with drying a cell phone that had water damaged, I took my phone apart and placed it on my windshield of my car and I had luck and it worked again. There is no guarantee that this will work and you will be taking a risk by even taking your cell phone apart, but if you do not have any money or warranty and are ready to toss your iPhone out the window, this is an option to try. After about 24 hours or more depending on how saturated your iPhone is, put it back together and turn it on. Good Luck!
